The title for this post is the heading for 2 Peter 3:1-13 in my Bible. As I was reading this passage this morning, I began to think about all the people who might be wondering, “Is Jesus really going to come back?” Well, as the heading summarizes, the Day of the Lord will come. You can take it to the bank. As the saying goes, “God said it and that settles it.” I know it is cliché, but I hope you get the point.
I tend to think about the second coming of Christ in light of the New Testament writers’ thinking. They believed that Jesus could come at any time. Therefore, I believe that Jesus could come at any time. But why hasn’t He come back? Why is He waiting so long? Sometimes I wish that He would just come back to prove that what He says is true. However, it is actually advantageous for us that He waits. Let me explain.
Second Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” I have family members, friends, and acquaintances that do not know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It breaks my heart, but I will not stop telling them of the good news of Christ. Until time runs out, I will proclaim the gospel to them.
According to this verse, this is why Jesus is delaying His return. He wants the unsaved sinners to reach repentance. He wants to save them! A lot of people try to paint God as a cruel Judge who punishes too severely. First of all, that shows that we are misunderstanding our sin, but that will have to wait for another post. On the other hand, God gives chance after chance after chance to these people who make this statement to escape punishment. He does not want you to perish! He wants to save you!
Know for sure that the Day of the Lord will come. When is it going to come? I have no idea! I do know that it could happen at any time. But until then, let’s passionately proclaim the gospel, understanding that God’s desire is that none would perish. That should be our desire as well.
