This may be an awkward post for some, but it is something that I think needs to be said in a culture where “It’s just sex” is used.
I was reading in 1 Corinthians 6, and I noticed something in verse sixteen. That verse says, “Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.'”
What that verse teaches us is that sex is the “means” of two becoming one flesh. We talk about consummating our marriages with sex. What does that mean? It means that we are showing the reality of what the ceremony and signatures on a piece of paper only gave a foretaste. Through sex, we link ourselves to our spouse as “one flesh.”
How then can we take sex so lightly? I hear stories all the time of Christians who say they are Bible believing, church going people, but yet they engage in premarital sex. As Paul says in verse 15, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute?”
Our culture tells us, “It’s just sex.” Having multiple partners, living with people, and remaining casual through it all are placed before us from many different directions. However, we are to be different. The Bible is clear: sex links you to that person as one flesh.
